"A king governs best / in the dark, where you can’t see his hands move.": A poetry evening with Kaveh Akbar, Paige Lewis, and friends

We were thrilled to welcome Kaveh Akbarauthor of Calling a Wolf a Wolf and founder of the excellent interview series over at divedapper.com—to the bookstore for a reading. He was joined by fellow poets Paige Lewis (whose collection Space Struck is forthcoming from Sarabande Books), Eli Tareq Lynch, and Alisha Dukelow. This lovely event was hosted by Sina Queyras, prolific poet, professor, and curator.

Montrealers packed the house, which was noted by Paige Lewis: "It is amazing to see standing-room only at a poetry reading!" Each reader brought something peculiar and vital to the stage. There is an incredible sound that one can feel when the attention of fifty-odd people is trained on a single human voice. We are lucky to have had such an observant audience with such generous authors.

Kaveh capped the evening with an electrifying reading of his long-poem "The Palace", the sound and shape of which seemed to come out of him at all angles. Afterwards, he was kind enough to sign copies long into the night. Many thanks to our wonderful host, readers, and audience for such a memorable event.
