Today we're saying happy birthday to the King of Creep, the Grandfather of Goth, Edward Gorey, on what would be have been his 94th birthday.  We're taking a moment to celebrate with Mark Dery's biography of the artist, Born to be Posthumous, released this past November. 

Did you know that Gorey lived with 6 cats? Or that he rubbed elbows with John Ashberry and roomed at Harvard with Frank O'Hara? He published over 100 books and illustrated many others. Maybe you've recognized his style from John Bellairs' The House with a Clock in Its Walls or from T.S. Eliot's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.

We love The Epileptic Bicycle, The Doubtful Guest, and The Gashlycrumb Tinies; three dark and delightful pocket-sized treats. Maybe, like me, you read The Gashlycrumb Tinies as a kid with a mix of terror and intrigue. Did you also play the game where you added your own name into the book...
