Remote Control - Nnedi Okorafor

After the Rain - Nnedi Okorafor

We’re kicking off the year with a double-barreled shot from the prolific and multitalented Nnedi Okorafor, who is already beloved for her Binti series (a classic of 21st-century sci-fi) and has also made numerous comics Marvel’s Black Panther and the Shuri spin-off series. After the Rain is a stand-alone original graphic novel that adapts one of her earlier short stories about a young Nigerian-American woman who awakens mysterious ancestral powers while visiting her grandmother in Nigeria. Remote Control, meanwhile, is a slim fantasy novel about a girl who becomes the adopted child of the Angel of Death.

Detransition Baby - Torrey Peters

This much buzzed-about debut novel from Torrey Peters is already being hailed as a contemporary touchstone of trans literature, following the lives of three New York women (trans and cis) whose lives collide after an unexpected pregnancy upends their expectations. Fearlessly navigating taboos around gender, sex, and relationships, Peters delivers the saucy, gossipy pleasures of Sex and the City, updated and enriched to encompass the broader and more fraught territory of womanhood in 2021.

Mina Among the Shadows - Edem Awumey

Edem Awumey’s novel, translated from the French, follows the protagonist’s search through his hometown on Africa’s Atlantic coast for a lost lover and muse, crossing paths along the way with former theatre friends who have since joined the establishment. We’re elated to host Awumey on Thursday, February 25th, in conversation with H. Nigel Thomas!

Everyone Else Is Perfect - Gabrielle Korn

As the former editor of Nylon (and the youngest editor-in-chief of a prominent fashion media outlet in history), Gabrielle Korn championed fashion reporting foregrounding stories traditionally marginalized by mainstream media, from gay rights ro body positivity. Her seemingly perfect life of success, however, hid a different story of troubled health and well-being. This eye-opening collection of essays pulls back the curtain on the fashion industry while relating inspirational and confessional accounts of Korn’s personal struggles with sexuality and insecurity in the Instagram age.
